Crawford's Cottage-- Little Golden Books Tribute by TOON-STER Crawford's Cottage-- Little Golden Books Tribute by TOON-STER
Here's a version with layout and background only:
[link]

OMG, I PULLED IT OFF! The colour scheme, the composition and everything!
Complete with alliteration and text!

To you guys here at dA and the guys at school, this is a tribute to the style of Little Golden Books and this is where my character "Crawford The Wolf" lives! On the slope of a mountain peak.

I'm so happy to finally finish this! I told you I would!
(Part of a storyboard I was going to finish with it)

I'm also super surprised about how well the style works with my character style too!

I only just saw that you requested a critique. So, to be more specific:

The composition rocks. Shrewd use of triangles!

The earthy tones you used are pleasing, and quite unconventional to boot. Love the many shades of brown you've chosen! However, the red and blue flowers in the front row, as well as the red and blue tree spots in the back, generate a little extra noise you might want to get rid of.

The foreground/background relationship is a vast improvement over your previous piece (as much as I loved that one). Maybe a little more dark and light contrast would help set them apart, but I wouldn't sweat over it. I like your placement of white, but the hard white edges around the trees and clouds definitely need to be softened, as does the shape of the clouds themselves.

Some of the flaws I mentioned stem from your choice of brush throughout. The consistent digitized scratchiness at the edge of many of the paint strokes robs the piece of much texture. The sun, whose features are all the same line width, looks especially flat (though I love his expression and skewed eyes!). That's the most reason for me to ding the Technique, but I'm not much of a digital painter myself so take that for what it's worth.

Don't get me wrong, 'cause I love the thought process and the feeling behind this piece. Upon closer inspection, I think it needs a good deal of polish. I encourage you to try some new techniques early on in the project so you have an aesthetic blueprint. If you are most comfortable with the scratchy brush, consider using that for comps or thumbnails, putting smoother brushwork on top, and varying the opacity wildly for shading and such.

Above all, though, keep it simple, because that is a large part of the appeal of your work. Even with the technical issues, the giddy, scribbly comic-strip asymmetry sells this piece to me.

Good luck and have fun!

One thing that strikes me instantly about this pic is how ambitious it is, as you point out on your front page that you have only been drawing a few months and your willingness to try new things out rather then play it safe is commendable. The only issues I feel here is that inexperience is still and issue because while I do like the picture it does lack the discipline you will obtain over time. One thing I feel is that the brush strokes that are used here really don't capture the paint brush look....something which I will admit is hard to capture on computer in general. I also found the font actually to be a good touch.

Issues aside I do like this pic and shows that you have a great deal of spirit and drive and it's carrying your work far. What I see here is work that while not as technically as polished or refined as some shows a great deal of raw talent and potential. I will enjoy seeing where you go with your work from here.

I'm wondering - it's nicely neutral, but seems oddly saturated (I find computers encourage this.)

I remember the Little Golden Books. Those were some of the best looking storybooks a parent could give to their child. This is a wonderful homage to those books, good on you man.

I have to admit, though, that was a first impression. I noticed after typing that you requested a critique, so I went into some ways you could improve the technique. That's only if you want to take it to a full level of polish -- I'm pretty cool with this as a storyboard. =)
